Hydrogen Micro Grid
Net/Zero energy creates value in multiple ways, from maintaining our competitive advantage, to improving the financial value of our assets, mitigating market risk, and promoting the health and wellbeing in our community.

By utilizing passive resources to make buildings more efficient, such as natural daylight and ventilation, the building inherently becomes a healthier and more satisfying place to live, work or play.

Utilizing all free resources (natural daylight and ventilation), reducing waste, maximizing efficiency, integrating all systems, and then adding onsite or offsite renewable energy to make up for the remaining energy consumption. This will save us 80% to 100% over energy efficiency baselines.

Our project will save money over the entire life cycle of its equipment, and in energy and maintenance
costs. The potential of energy-efficient buildings to improve bottom lines and property value, drive economic growth and reduce harmful pollution to create a healthier lifestyle.
What is hydrogen?
Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements on earth and has the highest energy content of any common fuel by weight.
When combusted, hydrogen produces water vapor, not greenhouse gas emissions. It can be safely produced, transported, stored and blended into the existing gas grid to help decarbonize the pipelines.
Hydrogen has been safely used for decades in aeronautics to fuel space exploration and in the industrial sector to process food, manufacture electronics, and make glass and metal. In addition, Europe, Asia, and Australia are scaling up their use of hydrogen to combat climate change and lower carbon emissions.
At SoCalGas we live by three values: Do the Right Thing, Champion People and Shape the Future.
These values permeate our company. They guide how we think and drive our actions. As one of America’s largest energy providers, our values are the lens through which we see every opportunity and challenge.
With our values providing a strong foundation, our mission statement presents an actionable framework of purpose and intent. At SoCalGas, we’re dedicated to leading the transition to a decarbonized energy system.
We believe every Californian deserves a clean, affordable, resilient energy future. SoCalGas is working to achieve that future through innovation, collaboration, and decarbonization.
Understanding Hydrogen Energy
Clean, renewable hydrogen1 microgrids can enhance community energy resilience by leveraging distributed renewable energy production, storage, and use.
Local energy generation reduces strain & supports the electric grid. Supplies critical and emergency energy with zero greenhouse gas emissions during power outages.

1Clean, renewable hydrogen is defined as hydrogen produced with a carbon intensity equal to or less than two kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent produced at the site of production per kilogram of hydrogen produced, and that does not use any fossil fuel in its production process.

Electricity, on the other hand, isn't nearly as efficient-it loses power as it travels over distance, so only 26 to 38 percent of the power remains by the time it reaches your home or business.
Because most of our solar fields, wind farms and power plants aren't located near where people live, we need to generate a lot more electricity to make up for the power that's lost over transmission lines.*
